Critical Role is a group of voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons on camera, and it has a LOT of episodes. If you are trying to work out how to watch Critical Role, the backlog is the scary part. I’m going to attempt to give you a straight answer: where to start, what you can skip, and what to save for later. Facts below come from published sources, linked as we go. The recommendations are my opinion.

How to watch Critical Role: friends around a gaming table with a glowing map and dice, tiny fantasy heroes cast on the wall behind them

How big is the Critical Role backlog?

Big. According to Wikipedia’s episode list, the first campaign (Vox Machina) ran 115 episodes from 2015 to 2017. The second campaign (The Mighty Nein) ran 141 episodes from 2018 to 2021. The third (Bells Hells) ran 121 episodes from 2021 to 2025. Each episode usually runs three to five hours, according to Wikipedia’s Critical Role article. That is 377 episodes across the first three campaigns. Campaign 4 is still running (Wikipedia’s list showed 23 episodes as of April 2026), so the real total is already past 397 and counting. Even at the three-hour low end, 397 episodes is nearly 1,200 hours (that is my own math, 397 x 3). Nobody is watching all of that before the next episode drops.

A fourth campaign started on October 2, 2025, with Brennan Lee Mulligan as the game master. Per the same episode list, it had 23 episodes as of April 2026 and is still running.

How to watch Critical Role: the short answer

Start with Campaign 2. Watch The Mighty Nein from episode 1. That is the pick I would give anyone who asks how to watch Critical Role, and here is why, using the r/criticalrole new-viewer guide as the backup. That guide describes Campaign 2 as a fresh start with no homework: new characters, a level 2 start, fully self-contained, and polished production from the beginning. It also says the first campaign has an early rough patch in production quality.

The setting backs that up. Per Wikipedia, Campaign 2 takes place about 20 years after the first campaign’s final battle, on a continent the first campaign only briefly visited. You are not missing a prerequisite. Fans who love the first campaign will tell you that you are missing out, and they may be right, but you will not be lost.

Critical Role Campaign 2 versus Campaign 3

This is the question every new viewer asks, so let me be direct. Skip Campaign 3 for now. It is not a bad place to start, but it is a bad first one. The episode list says it takes place immediately after Exandria Unlimited, and several cast members reprise characters from that series. In its last stretch, the cast also returns as their characters from Campaign 1 and Campaign 2. If you have not seen those, you lose a lot of the payoff.

The fan guide agrees on the tradeoff: Critical Role Campaign 3 works as a standalone if you do not care about spoilers or missing cameos, but expect big spoilers for the first two campaigns. Watch Campaign 2 first. Then Campaign 3 hits much harder. One heads up: the Campaign 3 finale ran over eight and a half hours, per Wikipedia, so clear your weekend.

How to watch Critical Role if you are impatient

If 141 episodes sounds like too much, you have two shorter doors in.

The first is Exandria Unlimited: Calamity. It is a four-episode limited series, per Wikipedia’s list, set 1,500 years before the main shows, with Brennan Lee Mulligan as the game master. That makes it a story that stands on its own. Four episodes at the usual length is a long weekend. The fan guide calls it a short, self-contained story and one of the most acclaimed mini-series.

The second is the animation. The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime Video adapts the first campaign, according to Wikipedia. The fan guide suggests watching its first season, then jumping into Campaign 1 at episode 24 or 28 for better pacing. A Mighty Nein animated series also premiered on November 19, 2025. If you plan to watch Campaign 2 itself, the fan guide says to do that before the cartoon.

What you can skip

Here is my opinion on what is safe to skip while you figure out how to watch Critical Role without drowning:

Early Campaign 1. The first episodes are rough, and the fan guide says to start at 24 or 28 if you go that route. The animated series covers the early arcs anyway.

Most one-shots. Per Wikipedia, only a handful are on the canonical timeline. Many are standalone fun. Three of the canonical ones, The Search for Grog, The Search for Bob and Dalen’s Closet, are best saved for the end of Campaign 1, according to the fan guide.

Everything about Campaign 3 until you finish Campaign 2. Spoilers are the whole reason.

How to watch Critical Role for free

Per Wikipedia, episodes air on Twitch and YouTube on most Thursdays, and the free YouTube version goes up the following Monday. Beacon, the studio’s own streaming service, also carries them. There is also an audio podcast version, which the same article says launched around the 100th episode, so you can listen on a commute.

How to watch Critical Role live with Campaign 4

There is one more route. Campaign 4 is a new setting called Aramán, per the episode list, and it uses the 2024 revision of the fifth edition rules. The player cast grew, and after the first four sessions the game master split the players into three groups. If you want to start at the same time as everybody else and avoid lore entirely, that is the door. The fan guide makes the same point: nobody has to catch up on past lore. The catch is that it is still running, so you are following it live.

If you also run games yourself, our guide to five rules new Dungeon Masters should break early pairs well with watching a pro game master at work.

Our take: If you want the one-line answer on how to watch Critical Role, it is this: Campaign 2, episode 1. Use Calamity if you want something short, and the Vox Machina cartoon if you want to start with the first campaign. Save Critical Role Campaign 3 for after you know the earlier characters, and treat Campaign 4 as the live option. Tell us where you started and whether it worked.
